Stepping into a land-based casino for the first time can be an exhilarating yet slightly intimidating experience. Being familiar with proper casino (my company) etiquette and attire will make your experience much more pleasant.

Understanding Casino Attire

Forget the black-tie image; most casinos today have a much more relaxed dress code. The required level of dress often depends on the establishment and even the time.

• Casual (Most Casinos, Daytime): For most casinos, especially during the day on the main gaming floor, the dress code is very casual. Think jeans and a nice shirt, or even shorts and trainers. However, it’s best to avoid overly sloppy or revealing clothing, swimwear, or offensive slogans.
• Smart Casual / Business Casual (Evening, Upscale Venues): For evening visits or at higher-end properties, you’ll need to dress a bit smarter. This means no shorts, casino flip-flops, or torn clothing. A good look for men is a button-down shirt with chinos. For women, a dress, casino skirt, or stylish top with trousers is appropriate.
• Formal (VIP Rooms, Fine Dining Restaurants): The strictest rules are for private gaming rooms and casino gourmet restaurants. This is where you might need to wear a jacket or more formal evening wear.

Pro Tip: It’s safer to be a bit too formal than too casual.

Following proper etiquette ensures a positive environment for all involved.

At the Gaming Tables

1. Learn the Game First: Don’t sit at a table game like blackjack or craps without knowing the basic rules.
2. Handle Your Chips and Cards Properly: Wait for the previous round to end before buying in. Place your cash on the table; don’t hand it directly to the dealer.
3. Signal Your Intentions: This avoids any miscommunication with the dealer.
4. Be Courteous: Dealers are professionals doing their job. Be polite and patient. Keep your comments to yourself and maintain a positive attitude.
5. Show Your Appreciation: If you’ve had a good run, it’s a nice gesture to tip your dealer. You can place a small bet for the dealer or just give them a chip directly.

General Floor Etiquette

• Device Usage: Using your phone at a gaming table is generally frowned upon and sometimes forbidden. Step away from the table if you need to take a call.
• Drinking: While drinks are often complimentary, don’t overdo it. Drunken behavior is disruptive and will likely result in your removal from the premises.
